beer lao girl's gittin' hitched!
Hey hey hey, friends and family! We Sayo-Niedzwieckis have exciting and excellent news to report. We had a call from Phet's brother this week, and here's how it went. Phet was still in Manila, so I had to do the communicating:
Phet's brother Long: Dim? (Phet?)
Me: Mai - Boh. An Ni Thaba. (No [in Thai, by mistake] No [in Lao], it's Thaba.
Phet's brother: Dim yu boh? (Is Phet there?)
Me: Boh, boh yu. Yu meuang Philippines. Meh sabai boh? (No, he's in the Philippines. Is your mother ok?)
Phet's brother: Dim boh yu. (Phet's not there.)
Me: Boh yu. Meh sabai boh? Mee panha boh? (Nope, he's not here. Is your mother ok? Is there a problem?)
Phet's brother: Ing see daeng ngan. (Ing's getting married.)
Me: ING SEE DAENG NGAN?? GUP PAI?? (Ing's getting married? To who?) Gup khon ku sohn boh? (With a teacher?)
Phet's brother: Eu, eu. (Yes, yes.)
Me: Deuan arrai ja - Deaun nyang see daeng ngan? (Which month [in Thai, by mistake] - Which month [in Lao]?
Phet's brother: Deaun sii. (April.)
Me: Wow! Sok dee, deu! Hao see bai! (Wow! Good luck! We'll come!)
Phet's brother: Eu, eu. Bye. (Ok, ok, bye.)
Me: BYE!
So, there you have it. Phet's little sister Ing is getting married. Those of you from Toronto may remember that Ing visited us there two years ago with Phet's dad. She was the cute, skinny one in the twelve sweaters. Well, now she's done gone and growed up and is getting married. We'll post more news - like, say, her fiance's name - when we get it. In the meantime, raise a glass of beer, and give a big toast to Ing, one of my four very favouritest sisters-in-law of ALL TIME. (By the way, me I can't BELIEVE Ing's getting married. She's the baby of the family and when we went to Pakse the first time in 1995 she was, like, eight years old. Gawd I'm getting old!) [Laos-12-February-2006]
