sporting prowessWe're off to Pakse at 6:30 am tomorrow, so this is going to be short and sweet. Here are a few videos of Ji's amazing achievements. Last week he LEARNED HOW TO SWIM. I can't tell you how incredible this was. For months we have been playing the evil parents who torture their child by forcing him to take off his floaties and swim for 3 seconds unsupported. Ji developed 'ear infections' and 'sore tummies' and other unreal ailments in order to avoid swimming. I finally smartened up once my morning sickness passed and realized I had to make a better effort to get him swimming. I started an extended, multi-week lecture entitled "Overcoming Your Fears" and amazingly enough it worked. Ji suddenly decided - overnight - that he'd give it a go, and right away he could swim. Then Phet found out that if Ji kept his head down, he could swim halfway across the pool. Then I took Ji swimming and he jumped off the diving board with no floaties and swam to the edge ALL BY HIMSELF. Two days ago I showed him how to do front crawl and he is now windmilling himself like mad across the pool. In telling y'all this, I am definitely not bragging. There are plenty of kids who learned to swim earlier than Ji. But let me tell you, it is really cool being a parent of a four year old. They learn things so insanely fast and turn corners at, like, a million miles an hour. Last week Ji also decided he likes brie cheese, and he is now a fan of shrimp. Not only that, but he decided he wanted to try toasted bugs (a Bangkok delicacy) and he chomped down a headless, salted cricket without blinking the other day after school. Today he asked if he could get a bag of crickets, but the bug man's stall wasn't out. Too bad. Here are the videos: Ji jumps off the diving board and swims! Ji wins the school's tug-of-war contest today at sports day! [Ji Hong-4-May-2006] |
